It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of a prominent political figure who played a major role in the Lebanese political scene. His Excellency President Michel Murr passed away today at the age of 89. He spent more than 60 years of his lifetime in patriotic, political, and economic practices, as well as lovingly serving people.

 

 

The family of President Murr expressed their deep sorrow for the loss of their beloved.

 

 

In compliance with governmental measures taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 and for the safety of those who wish to bid President Murr farewell, the family asks loved ones to pray for his soul from their homes, noting that a public mass will be held when circumstances allow.

 

 

During his political career, President Murr served in several governments, taking several posts including the roles of Deputy Speaker of the Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister, and Eldest MP. He was appointed head of 114 ministerial committees of financial, economic, and livelihood natures, as well as being appointed a member of the National Dialog Committee.

 

 

President Murr first ran for the parliamentary elections in 1960 and later in 1964. In 1968, he was elected to parliament for Metn district under the Tripartite Alliance list.

 

 

After the Taif Agreement, he was elected to parliament for the Greek Orthodox seat in Aley. Afterwards, he won during the 1992, 1996, 2000, 2005, 2009, and 2018 elections. During the 1992 elections, he was the leader of a parliamentary group consisted of ten members. During the elections of 1996 and 2000, President Murr headed a group of seven members.
