US-Russia Nuclear Arms Treaty

Before its expiration on February 5, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the US President Joe Biden will seek an extension to the New START arms control treaty with Russia for five years. The Kremlin said it would welcome efforts promised by the new administration to reach a deal.

 

Tokyo Olympics Will Go Ahead

Japan’s Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Manabu Sakai denied reports about the possible cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics. 

The Times newspaper reported earlier that Japan’s government had privately concluded that the Tokyo Olympics would be called off due to the pandemic.

 

New Swine Fever Strain in China

Two new strains of African swine fever have been identified in Chinese pig farms. Industry insiders say the new variants are most likely caused by illicit vaccines. Many farmers have resorted to unauthorized products to protect their pigs. Although still limited, if the new forms spread widely, they could pose a threat to the world’s largest pork producer.

 

France to Test Travelers

French President Emmanuel Macron announced that PCR tests would be mandatory for all travelers into France, including those arriving from EU countries, starting Sunday. The test will have to be carried out no later than 72 hours before departure. Cross-border and land transportation workers will be exempt from the obligation.
